Abstract

In its 2001 Communication on“Strengthening economic policy co-ordinationwithin the euro area”, the Commissionhighlighted the importance of improving theeconomic assessment of the euro area, as wellas the quality of the public debate surroundingthe area's economic policy. In order to furtherenhance and smoothen the policy co-ordination process, the Commissionannounced the publication of a regular reporton economic developments in the euro area.The Report is to present an analysis of thegeneral situation and of economic policyissues. It contains analytical notes on currenteconomic trends, forecasts and risks, as wellas articles of a more analytical nature dealingwith particular aspects of multilateralsurveillance
