Abstract

Eurostat estimates that the seasonally-adju~t~d unemployment rate in the European Union (fifteen Member States) for the month of August 1996 was 1 0.8%, representing the same level as in the· two previous months and an increase of 0.1% by comparison with August 1995. I! Over recent months there has been little <r,ange in the European Union . . ... ' .. ; . unemployment rate, as a result of contrastin~ trends in different groups of Member States. The tendency has been upwfid in France, downward in the north-eastern and south-western corners of the fiU (Sweden, Finland, Spain and Portugal) and stationary in the remaining Member States. · The results of the 1996 French labour force su~Jy have been taken into accou~t. : : . : . causing a considerable revision of the figures fo'r France as published in earlier reports in this series.
