Abstract

With a slight increase of about 24 000 persons, more than two-thirds of whom were aged under 25, the number of persons registered as unemployed at unemployment offices in the Community of the Twelve in August remained about the same as in July 1986 at 15.6 million. Of this figure, male unemployment accounted for 8.7 million and female unemployment for 6.9 million. The figures for August also confirmed the by now well-established trend whereby women are the most affected by increases in the number of registered unemployed. Compared with the previous month, the number of unemployed males in the Community of .the; Twelve dropped slightly (-0,2%), while the number of unemployed females rose (+ 0,6%). The seasonally-adjusted figures for both groups in the Community paint more or less the same picture as the absolute figures. Thus, since March 1986 male unemployment has fallen steadily <-1r.), while female unemployment has increased(+ 2%).
