In May 1985, as in the previous two months, there was a drop in the number of registered unemployed in the Community <excluding Greece) owing largely to seasonal factors. The number dropped from 12.6 million in April to 12.3 million in May 1985. So the unemployment rate among the civilian working po-pulation fell from 11.2 to 10.9X. A comparison of the number of unemployed in the Community with the May 1984 figure shows that the labour market situation has deteriorated in most Member States. The number has increased by 3.9X in the Community as a whole. The rates of increase in Italy. (+ 8.3X> and Ireland (+ 7 .6X) are well over the Community average. Above-average increases also occurred in France (+ 5.3X) and the United Kingdom(+ 5.1X>, whereas the increases in Luxembourg (+ 1.7X) and the FR of Germany (+ 2.8X) remained below the Community average. In the remaining three Member States, the situation improved compared with May 1984. There were falls in the Netherlands <-8.7X>, Denmark <-7.4X) and Bel-gium <-4.3X).
