There were 13.6 million registered unemployed in the Community (excluding Greece) at the end of January 1985, the highest figure ever. The unemployment rate, as a percentage of the civilian working population, reached 12% for the first· time. The increase of almost 570 000 persons by comparison with the previous month cannot be explained solely by the severe weather in January 1985. After months of falling or stable unemployment in the Member States of the Community, the seasonally-adjusted figures have risen markedly again in some cases. This ap-plies in particular to the Federal Republic of Germany, Denmark, France and Belgium. By comparison with the previous month the increase in the unadjusted data was also greatest in the Federal Republic of Germany (12,7%) and Denmark (12,2%), followed by Luxembourg (6.9%) and the United Kingdom and Ireland (3.8%).
