Abstract

Unemployment in the Community rose by 3% between the end of July and the end of August 1980, thereby reaching a new peak of 6.8 million. As the seasonally cor-rected figures also show an increase, this is not simply the usual rise for the time of year due for example to school-leavers. Registered.unemployed as a percentage of the civilian working population went up from 6.1% at the end of July to 6.3% at the end of August 1980. Unemployment rates increased in most Member States compared with the previous month : Belgium from 9.9% to 10.4%; Ireland from 8.9% to 9.3%; the United Kingdom from 7.3% to 7.7%; Denmark from 5.2% to 5.6%; France from 5.9% to 6.1%; the Netherlands from 4.9% to 5.1%. In the three other Member States the unemployment rates remained unchanged, namely 0.6% for Luxembourg, 3.3% for the F.R. of Germany and 7.6% for Italy.
