Statistical Telegram. Monthly statistics of registered unemployment in the European Community.

Abstract

The number of unemployed persons registered at public employment offices in the Com'!ll'lni ty has remained practically unaltered at 5.9 million for the last three months, this being the figure for end-September 1979 also. Unemployment as a per~entage of the civilian working population has likewise remained stable at 5·4'%· Despite this marked stability at Community level, individual Member-states showed ver,y divergent trends in unemployment. Compared with the previous month five countries show a considerable reduction in numbers unemployed, namely the Federal Republic of Germany (-7.8%), Denmark {-6.3%), Ireland (-5.2%), the United Kingdom {-4·2%) and the Netherlands (-2.~). In Belgium unemploy-ment remained practically unchanged, as for the Community as a whole. For Italy a slight increase (+ 1%) was observed ~mile sharp rises occurred in France (+9·3~ and Luxembourg (..S. 7%).
