Statistical Telegram. Monthly statistics of registered unemployment in the European Community.

Abstract

At the end of November 1979 the number of unemployed registered at public em-ployment offices in the Community came to near 6.1 million. The unemployment rate, namely unemployed persons as a percentage of the total civilian working population, was 5.6%, the same as for the previous month. Compared with November 1978 the level of unemployment in the Community showed almost no change. However there was a reduction of 3.5% in the number of un-employed men and an increase of 4.1% in that of unemployed women. The largest reductions in numbers of registered unemployed by reference to the corresponding month in 1978 occurred in Denmark (-26.6%), the Federal Republic of Germany (-13.8%) and in Ireland (-10.9%). The numbers registered at public employment offices were above those of the previous year in France (+ 10.7%), Belgium (+ 4.6%), Luxembourg (+ 4•0%), Italy (+ 3·4%).
