At the end of 'february 1979 public employment offices in the Community recorded 6.4 Mio registered unemployed. This was 6.o% of the working population as against 6.1% in January. All Member States recorded a reduction in unemployment in February. Decreasing by 3.2%, registered unemployment in the Federal Republic of Germany went down more than in the Community as a whole (-1.4%). The same was true of Denmark and Luxembourg (about -2%). The decrease in Italy and the Netherlands was about the same as the Community average, while in the United Kingdom, the reduction in unemployment was smaller (-0.2%). Compared with February 1978 registered unemployment in the Community went up by about 170 000 or 2. 7%. For individual Nember States, however, the pattern is fairly different; in some countries unemployent went up while in others it went down. Over this period registered unemployment went down in Denmark (about -10%), Federal Republic of Germany (-7.4%), Luxembourg (-6.9%) and the United Kingdom (-3.8%) but went up in France (+ 21%), Italy (+5.7%), Belgium (+5.1%) and the Netherlands (+3.1%).
