Statistical Telegram. Monthly statistics of registered unemployment in the European Community.

Abstract

For the first time in more than half a year the number of registered unemployed fell at the end of April 1979 to just under 6 million. Following a decline o·f more than 227,000, the number of unemployed persons registered at public employ-ment offices stood at 5,9 ~illion at the end of April 1979· There was a corres-ponding fall in the percentage of registered unemployed in the civilian working population, from 5.7% in the preceding month to 5·5%. Unemployment was reduced compared with the previous month in all Member States of the Community. For the Community as a whole the fall in numbers unemployed amounted to-3.7%. In most Member States the reduction was, however, conside-ratly greater: in Luxembourg -15.2%, Denmark -14.~, Federal Republic of Ger-many-8.6%, Netherlands-1·1% and United Kingdom-4·4%• In Belgium (-3.0%), France (-1.7%) and Italy (-0.4%) the declines were less, sometimes by a conside-rable amount, than the Community average.
