Based on the latest results, available from harmonized statistics by NACE classes (Nomenclature of economic activities in the European Community), the Statistical Office estimates that the number of occupied employees has declined in the Community between April I974 and April I978 from about 39,4 Mio to 37,1 Mio, a fall of 5,9$. Production and preliminary processing of metals NACE 22 ( 916$), Manufacture of paper and paper products NACE 47 ( 9»2$), Extraction of minerals other than metalliferous and energyproducing minerals NACE 23/24 ( 9,1%), Footwear and Clothing NACE 45 (9,0%) and Building and civil engineering NACE 5 (8,; In the industries "Energy and water" and "Manufacture of Motorvehicles" a small augmentation of the number of occupied employees is noted. The diminution in numbers of employees is particularly marked in the case of women. Their share has, for the total of industry in the Community, regressed from 25% in 1974 to 23,% in I978. In some industries, the proportion of women in the total of employees has stayed very high, e.g. in "Footwear and Clothing", "Other manufacturing" and "Textiles".
