Enlargement has been a success storyfor the European Union as a whole. Ithas helped to overcome the division ofEurope and contributed to peace andstability throughout the continent.2009 will be an historical date as itmarks a double-anniversary: the fall ofthe Iron Curtain occurred exactly 20years ago which has brought a majoreconomic and political transformationof central and Eastern Europe. And inMay, it will coincide with the 5th anni-versary of the last 2004 Enlargementthrough which 10 new Member statesjoined the EU.
