dc.description.abstract | Fewer pupils and students, but tending to stay longer in the education system. During the eighties the number of pupils and students in the Community fell by about 3 million to slightly less than 72 million in 1989/90. However, a gradual decline in numbers throughout the decade masks contrasting trends in the various levels of education. On the one hand, there is a decrease due to a fall in the number of children starting school while, on the other, there is an increase due to a tendency to stay longer in education. |
