| dc.description.abstract | eurostat Theme3 Population and social conditions Series B Short-term trends Unemployment 7 0 1991 Monthly 30th June 1991 UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE COMMUNITY May 1991 The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the European Community is estimated by Eurostat, after correction of the differences between national meth-ods of recording unemployment, at 8. 7% for the month of May 1991. This repre-sents an Increase of one tenth of a percentage point in relation to the previous month. This is the fourth consecutive month there has been a rise in unemployment. Un-employment hat thus reached its highest level since May 1989. The upward trend that has been apparent for 6 months in the majority of Member States continued during May, particularly in the United Kingdom ( +0.3%), Den-mark ( + 0.2%), France, Italy and Ireland ( + 0.1 %). By contrast, the rate of unem-ployment did not vary in the former Lander of the Federal Republic of Germany, Spain and Portugal. Slight decreases had been observed in these Member States over the last 6 months. The unemployment rate among females increased significantly less ( + 0.1% In 6 months) than the total rate of unemployment ( +0.4% In 6 months). Regarding young persons under 25 years, the rate climbed 0.3% in 6 months, despite a slight decrease In Southern Member States. Among young males there was a significant increase ( + 1.0% in 6 months) due to some considerable in-creases, especially in the United Kingdom ( + 2.6%) and Belgium ( + 1.3%) which were not entirely oofset by appreciable falls in Spain (-1.0%) and Portugal. |
