| dc.description.abstract | The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the European Community is estimated by Eurostat, after correction of the differences between national meth-ods of recording unemployment, at 8.6% for the month of April1991. This rep-resents an increase of one percentage point in relation to the previous month. · · · After 4 years of continued decrease, the number of unemployed persons, based on ILO definition, levelled off In 1990 at just below 12 million for the whole Com-munity. Since the beginning of 1991, there has been a continued increase (more than 3% in 3 months) notably among young persons ( +5%) and males ( +4%). In countries where the rate of unemployment is higher in April1991 than it was a year earlier (United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark and France) the upward trend in-creased: the increase was as significant between January and April 1991 as it was for the previous 9 months. On the other hand, in those countries where the rate is decreasing (former Federal Republic of Germany, Spain and Portugal) the annual downward trend remains stable. Unemployment is decreasing faster here among males than fe-males, and among adults than young persons under 25 years. |
