Based on the most recent results of the Community Labour Force Survey, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the European Community is estimated by Eurostat at 9.1% for the months of August and September 1991. This rate is estimated after correction of the differences between national methods of recording unemployment. In June 1990, the rate of unemployment fell to 8.4%, its lowest level since 1983. The number of unemployed persons was estimated at just under 12.2 million. 19.8% of these were in Spain, 18.9% in Italy, 18.0% in France, 16.2% in the United Kingdom and 12.4% in the western part of the Federal Republic of Germany. 15 months later, at the end of September 1991, Eurostat estimates the number of unemployed persons at almost 13.2 million. The share of each member state has changed significantly: 22.6% in the United Kingdom, 18.3% in France, 17.9% in Italy, 17.4% in Spain and 10.2% in the western part of the Federal Republic -of • Germany.
