Abstract

After compensating for differences in national recording methods, the sea-sonally adjusted unemployment rate in the European Community, ac-cording to the Intermltional Labour Office (ILO) definition, is estimated to have been 8.6% in January 1990, compared with 8.7% for the previous month. During the last month unemployment rates fell or were static in all Mem-ber States. Over the last six months the unemployment rate for the Community as a whole has fallen from 8.9% to 8.6%, all countries having experienced a fall over this period. The downward trend has been broadly similar for both men and women but the rate for young people under 25 years of age has fallen more steeply from 17.2% to 16.3%.
