The number of registered unemployed in the Community (excluding Greece) rose by almost 87 000 to reach 12.5 million by the end of August 1985. 'The unemployment rate, as a percentage of the civilian working population, thus rose to 11.0X, as compared with 10.9X in July 1985. Almost all the newly registered unemployed in August 1985 were women (82 000= 1.SX>; this was the case in all Member States except Italy. The number of unemployed men remained virtually unchanged. The unemployment rate for women rose in the Community from 11.9X in July to 12.1X in August 1985, the biggest increases being in Denmark (9.5X to 10.8X>, followed by the Netherlands C13.5r. to.14.1r.> and Belgium (19.1r. to 19.5X). Of all Member States, Belgium <19.5X) has the highest unemployment rate for women, followed by Italy <17.2X> and Ireland <16.6X). Approximately 60X (51 000) of the newly-registered unemployed women in August 1985 were aged under 25 years. Young women therefore accounted for 42.7X of the total number of unemployed women at the end of August 1985, as opposed to 42.4X at the end of July 1985. The highest proportions of young unemployed women, as a percentage of unemployed women of all ages, are found in the Netherlands C53.6X>, Luxembourg <52.7X) and Italy (50.5X>, whilst the lowest are found in Denmark C26.8X) and the Federal Republic of Germany C28.8X).
