At the end of February 1985 there were 13.6 million registered unemployed in the Community <excluding Greece>, a fall of about 96 500, or 0.7%, compared with January 1985. The largest fall in the number of unemployed persons was recorded in Belgium (almost 4%>, followed by France and Luxembourg (around 2%). The seasonally-adjusted figures for the Community as a whole and for the individual Member States showed no appreciable change over the previous month. In February, the unemployment rate among the civilian working population in the Community (excluding Greece) was 12.0%. It was highest in Ireland (18.1%), followed by Belgium (14.5%>, Italy and the Netherlands (14.1% in each case). The figure for the United Kingdom (12.6%) was slightly above the average for the Community, while those for the Federal Republic of Germany <9. 7%) and, in particular, Luxembourg <1.8%) remained below the average. The proportion of women in the total number of unemployed in the Community has dropped from 43.0% to 40.8% over the past five months. This is explained not only by the larger than average increase in unemployment among men which usually occurs in winter but also by a drop of about 50 000 in the number of women registered as unemployed in the Community in February <-1.1%) as compared with -0.4% among men).
