The rate of unemployment in the Community of Nine showed a slight increase between July and August 1984 (from 10.9X of the civilian working population in July to 11.0X in August). The total number of persons unemployed at 12.4 million was the highest yet recorded for any summer month. In contrast to the Summer of 1983 when the seasonally adjusted values indi-cated some stabilisation in the labour market of the Community of Nine, those in the summer months of 1984 showed unemployment rising. Pronounced increases were noted in France and Ireland.Almost steady levels were recor-ded in the Federal Republic of Germany, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom. The absolute figure of unemployment has risen by 6.2X between August 1983 and August 1984 in the Community of Nine; France with 16% and Ireland al-most 11% show the most marked increases in the last year. One reason for the renewed rise in unemployment in the Community of Nine is the continuing entry into the labour market of recent school leavers. Thus the numbers of unemployed persons aged under 25 years have shown a marked rise in most member states between July and August 1984. The greatest in-crease occured in Belgium, amounting to 11%. For the Community of Nine the estimated proportion of persons aged under 25 years in total unemployment rose from 38.8% to 39,3% in this period.
