dc.description.abstract | At the end of May 1984, the number of persons registered as unemployed in the Community of Nine was 12,2 million or 10,8% of the civilian working popula-tion. The number of unemployed now appears to be approaching the seasonal low nor-mally registered in May or June. The level of unemployment in the Community, however, is still 5,9% higher than in May 1983, although the increase has slowed down compared with previous years, the increase in 1983 over 1982 was: 14,9% and in 1982 over 1981 : 33,3%. Women are still worse affected by unemployment (+ 7% above the figure for May 1983 as compared with + 5% for men), with an unemployment rate of 11,6% compared with 10,3% for men. The seasonally adjusted figures show no change in the labour market situation for the Community of the Nine. National calculations for the Federal Republic of Germany and the United Kingdom show a very slight increase in the seasonal-ly adjusted figures; the data for France show no increase in May, whereas those for Ireland point to a slight decrease. Seasonal factors also have a very clear influence on the number of persons registered as unemployed at public employment offices in Greece (-20%). However, since the facilities for registration and the structure of the Greek labour market differ from those of the other Member States, this figure cannot be regarded as an indicator for the actual level of unemployment in Greece. |
