dc.description.abstract | The number of persons registered as unemployed at public employment offices in the Community of the Nine rose in January 1984 by more than 400 000 to a total of 12.8 million, a level higher than at any time since the Community was founded. Thus, at the end of January, the unemployment rate among the civilian working population was 11.5%. Despite this increase in the number of unemployed persons, the seasonally-adjusted figures for the Community of the Nine continue to indicate that unemployment is stabilizing, albeit at a high level. This is true of most Member States, although the seasonally-adjusted figures for the Federal Republic of Germany show a further fall, while in France, . after a long period of stability in the number of unemployed persons, the upward trend already observed in the previous two months has continued. The SOEC estimates that men and women aged under 25 accounted for 33% and 44% respectively of unemployed persons at the end of January. This means that one third of unemployed men and almost one in two unemployed women are under 25 years old. |
