The number of persons registered as unemployed at public employment offices in the Community of the Nine rose from 12.2 million in November 1983 to 12.4 million in December 1983. Over the same period, the unemployment rate among the civilian working population rose from 10.9 to 11.1%. The increase, between November and December, of 1.9% in the number of persons registered as unemployed is largely attributable to seasonal factors. There was a 3.5% rise in male unemployment, whill the number of unemployed women actually dropped slightly (-0.3%). The seasonally-adjusted figures are practically the same for December as for November in the Community of the Nine. They continue to show a downward trend in the Federal Republic of Germany but are rising in France.
