Between 1980 and 1981 the number of people in the Community having a job fell by 1.65 million, which corresponds to a reduction of 1.5%. All Member States were affected by this contraction in employment, it being particularly powerful in the United Kingdom (- 5.3%), in Belgium (- 2.1%) and in Denmark (- 1.4%). This new drop in employment appeared after the four years of slight growth that followed the reductions of 1975 and 1976. It is characterized mainly by a con-tinuation of the fall in employment in agriculture that has been going on for many years, compted with an accelerated reduction of jobs in industry. Industry in the Community occupied 4% less people in 1981 than in the previous year, the diminuation being nearly 10% in the United Kingdom, 7.5% in Denmark, 6% in Belgium and 4.7% in the Netherlands.
