| dc.description.abstract | There were 10.9 million persons registered as unemployed in the Community of Nine at the end of August 1982, amounting to 9.8% of the civilian working population. The rate of unemployment recorded at end-August 1982 was 14.6% in Belgium, 13.?% in Ireland, 12.8% in the United Kingdom, 10.5% in the Netherlands a.nd 10.4% in ftaly. By contrast the Luxembourg rate amounted only to 1.1%. In the case of men, the average rate of unemployment for the Community of Nine was 9.2%, the highest figur0 being encountered in the United Kingdom where one mar1 in ~even (14.5%) is now registered as unemployed. This very high rate war:; approached in Ireland (13.8%). In the Netherlands and Belgium also the unemployment rate for men <:)(-ceeds 10% (10.5% and 10.4% respectively). The unemployment rate for women is above that for men in all the countrie:; of the Community of Nine with the exception of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The range by the figures is very wide, going from 21.2% in Belgium to 1.8% in Luxembourg, with a Community average of 10.9%. |
