| dc.description.abstract | The total number of registered unemp~oyed in the Community of Nine at the end of January 1981 was 8.4 millions, representing 7.7 percent of the civilian work-ing population. An increase of half a million in the number of registered unemployed occurred in January, the largest rise recorded in a single month in the Community. This month traditionally represents a high point for unemployment and the seasona1ly corrected figure does not reach 8 million. Nevertheless the seasonally corrected figures.continue to grow, for men as well as for women. The only positive factor which can be detected in the results is that the rate of increase in the season-ally corrected figures appears to be diminishing. The number of registered unemployed having stabilised at around 6 million in the years 1978 and 1979, the year 1980 was marked by a very substantial increase, with a further], 8 million persons added to the total. |
