For the first time the number of registered unemployed in the Community is in excess of 7 million. As the seasonally corrected figure also exceeds this level for the first time, the increase of over 1 million in the last four months indicates a substantial worsening of the labour market situation. At the end of September 1980 the number of 7.1 million registered unemployed was equivalent to an unemployment rate of 6.5%. At the end of the previous month registered unemployed as a percentage of the civilian working population was of 6.3%. Compared with August 1980 unemployment in the Community has risen by 3.0%. The developments in most Member States were similar to that in the Community as a whole. Pronounced increases were recorded in France (+ 10.5%) and in Luxembourg (+ 9.6%), followed by Denmark(+ 4.5%). In the other Member States the increases ranged between 2 and 3%. Only in the F.R. of Germany does a comparison with Au-gust 1980 show a reduction, of almost 5%.
