| dc.description.abstract | Following a slight decline of 0. r;% in the Community as a whole, the number of unem-ployed persons registered at public employment offices at the end of June 1979 amount-ed to 5.6 million. As for the previous month, registered unemployed represented 5.2% of the civilian working population. The seasonally adjusted figures likewise show a slight improvement in the labour market. Compared with the previous month, each Member State with the exception of the Nethel'-lands and the United Kingdom shows a reduction in the number unemployed. The observed increases are due, in part, to school leavers who appear on the labour market at this time. Unemployment in the Community has risen by 1% in comparison with the corresponding month last year. This rise is. accounted for by an increase in female unemployment ( + 5. lf1,). In contrast, unemployment in the case of men has declined by 2 • .5% in the same period. A consideration of the development of unemployment in the Community over the past 18 months shows a reduction of almost 730,000 persons which, for the greater part (660,000) is accounted for by men |
