At the end of January 1979 public employment offices in the Community recorded 6.5 Mio registered unemployed, 5% more than at the end of the previous month. Registered unemployment in the Community in January was 6.0% of the civilian \-Torking population, in December 1978 this rate was 5. 7%. The increase is clearly due to seasonal factors, seasonaly adjusted figures for the Community show no change compared ~1i th December 1978. The countries most affected by bad weather show the greatest increases on December in registered unemployed men : + 30.3% in the Federal Republic of Germany, + 16.4% in Luxembourg, + 14.3% in Denmark, + 7.6% in the Netherlands and+ 7.5% the United Kingdom. A sensible although much smaller augmentation of unemployed women was recorded only in the United Kingdom (+ 4.7%) and in the Fedetal Republic of Germany (+ 2.8%). One year ago the rate of unemployed men in the Community as a whole was the same {5.57~) but the rate for unemployed women in the working population has grown from 6.5% to 6.9%. These combine to give a total rate (men and women) of 6.0% compared with 5.9% in January 1978.
