In the Communl ty as a. whole, registered unemployment a.t the end of October 1978 amounted to 5.6% of the civilian working population. At the end of September the corresponding figure was 5·5%. In this period the total number of registered unemployed rose by 0.9% to slightly over 6 millions, this increase being apparent also in the seasonally corrected figures. As in the previous month, this relatively slight overall change covers very diverse trends in the different Member Countries. The number of unemployed registered a.t public employment offices declined in Luxem-bourg (-9.6%), the United Kingdom (-5.8%), the Netherlands (-1.o%) and also to some extent in Belgium (-o,4%). These reductions m~ be attributed in part to special me-auras for combatting unemployment (a.s in the case of Luxembourg).
