dc.description.abstractOn 3 October 1990, the former German Democratic Republic became part of the European Community, and with this the area of the Community increased by 108 000 krrr and its population by 16 million. With a totalpopulation of345 million at 1 January 1991, the Community remains thethirdlargest population in the world, although the gap has now widened with the USSR (289 million), the United States (249 million) and Japan (123 million). This report takes account of the Community's new boundaries, and gives an indication of the contribution made by the former GDR.
