Statistics in Focus: Population and social conditions. First results of the demographic data collection for 1998 in Europe.

Abstract

This is the second publication from the joint data collection exercise carried out by the Council of Europe and Eurostat. The results from the first exercise were published in Statistics in Focus 1998 No. 9, which also provided more commentary than here. A rapid questionnaire was sent out in May 1999 to the member and non-member states of the Council of Europe with observer status (46 in total) with a June return date. The country coverage is included in the tables and in the Glossary on the following pages. The objective of this publication is to provide some basic demographic information for 1998 as soon as possible. However given the timetable, not all countries could provide all the information while some figures are provisional or estimates. Additional and/or more definitive information will be published in the annual reports of the Council of Europe ("Recent demographic developments in Europe 1999") and Eurostat ("Demographic statistics 1999").
