Eurostat regional yearbook 2021

Abstract

Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU), collects, compiles and publishes statistics for the EU and euro area, as well as national, regional and other subnational data, primarily for the Member States of the EU, but also for the EFTA and candidate countries. The Eurostat regional yearbook aims to provide a taste of the wide selection of European statistics that are collected at a regional level across a broad range of subjects. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the EU and the wider world profoundly and is likely to have a lasting impact on a range of social, economic and environmental issues in years to come. Although vaccine programmes provide hope that countries across the globe will emerge from the crisis, considerable challenges remain. The impact of the pandemic and its associated measures within the EU is already visible in this 2021 edition of the Eurostat regional yearbook. Initial results for 2020 for some indicators illustrate the impact — at a regional level — for topics such as mortality, education, the labour market and use of the internet.
