For the first time, in 1999, all EU Member States and countries taking part in the PHARE1 programme have provided data on education to Eurostat using the same questionnaires and the same methodology. The data, covering the 1997/98 school year, allow a comparison to be made between the Member States of the European Union and the PHARE countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia. Ten of these countries are candidates for EU membership.
