After compensating for differences in national recording methods, the sea-sonally adjusted unemployment rate in the European Community, ac-cording to the International Labour Office (ILO) definition, is estimated to have been 8.5% in March 1990, compared with 8.6% for the previous month. During the first three months of 1990 the unemployment rate in the Community as a whole continued on a downward trend. Compared with the final quarter of 1989 unemployment fell in almost all Member states. Most of the fall in the Community unemployment rate between the last quarter of 1989 and the first quarter of 1990 was due to a steady downward trend in unemployment among young people of both sexes, the rate falling. from 16.9% in October 1989 to 16.2% in the latest month. The unemploy-· ment rate for those aged 25 and over fell from 7.0% to 6.8% over the same period.
