According to the most recent available data, Eurostat estimates the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate based on the ILO (International Labour Office) definition to be 8.3% for the European Community in September 1990. This stability in the Community unemployment rate contrasts with the current increase in unemployment in the United States, up from 5.2% in June 1990, to 5.7% in September. Unemployment rates have remained stable in most Member States since June 1990. There were slight decreases, however, over this period in the Federal Republic of Germany (-0.2%), Portugal (-0.2%) and Spain (-0.2%) and slight increases in Belgium (+0.2%), Denmark (+0.2%) and the United Kingdom (+0.2%).
