Between August and September 1984, the number of persons registered as un-employed at public employment offices in the Community of the Nine rose by almost 330 000 to 12,7 million. Over the same period, the unemployment rate among the civilian working population. rose from 11.0 to 11.3%. The increase in the absolute number of unemployed in the Community of the Nine has been accompanied by a slight rise in the seasonally-adjusted figures over the past four months. Women appear to be more affected by the increase in structural unemployment than men. Between September 1983 and September 1984, the overall unemployment rate in the Community of the Nine rose from 10.7% to 11.3%. The rise was from 10.0% to 10.4% for men and from 11.8% to 12.6% for women. The large increase of almost 8% in the number of unemployed in France is attributable to seasonal factors, particularly the registration of large numbers of school-leavers which traditionally occurs in this month. For the first time in three months, there was no rise in the seasonally-adjus-ted figures for France. Similarly, there was a drop in these figures in the Federal Republic of Germany for the first time in several months. However, the increase of over 5% in the number of unemployed in the United Kingdom cannot be explained purely in terms of seasonal factors.
