The number of persons registered as unemployed at public employment offi-ces in the Community of the Nine rose by over 110 000 as compared with September 1984 and totalled 12.8 million at the end of October 1984. The unemployment rate, as a proportion of the civilian working population, rose from 11.3% to 11.4% during the same period. The number of persons affected by unemployment in the Community of the Nine thus rose by almost 1% in October 1984. This increase cannot be ex-plained by seasonal factors alone, but must also be attributed to under-lying trends. This is borne out by the seasonally adjusted figures, which have shown a renewed slight increase over a number of months. In France, after a relatively long period of labour market stability, there has been a further increase in the seasonally-adjusted figures and in the number of unemployed. On the other hand, the seasonally adjusted figures indicate that the situation has improved in the Federal Republic of Germany and in the Netherlands during the past two months
