For the first time since Ml.rch 1979 the number of persons registered at public employment offices in the Community rose to just over 6 million. Unemployment as a percentage of the civilian working population rose from 5·5% in September to 5.6% at end-October 1979· Compared with the preceding month unemployment in the Community as a whole in-creased by 1.4%· Very different trends occurred in the individual Member-States. In four countries there was a deteriora. tion in the labour market with the rate of increase in unempl~ent sometimes considerably above the Community average: Luxembourg {+ 13.8%), France (+ 3.9%), the Federal Republic of Germany (+ 3·4%) and Italy (+ 2.5%). In contrast, in three Member-States there were significant reductions in unemployment: the Netherlands (-2.4%), Belgium (-2.1%) and the United Kingdom (-1.9%). In two Member-States the labour marked remained rela-tively unchanged. In Ireland unemployment rose by 0.4% while in Denmark it fell by 0.3%·
