Statistical Telegram. Monthly statistics of registered unemployment in the European Community.

Abstract

In the Community registered unemployment decreased over the first six months of 1979. End July the number of persons registered as unemployed at public employ-ment offices increased however by nearly 250 000 compared to end June to reach 5·9 Mio. This represents 5.47~ of the civilian working population against 5•20fo in June 1979. The average increase of unemployment in the Community in July was thus 4.4%. Most Member States show rises above this average : Luxembourg + 16.9%, Belgium + 16.7%, United Kingdom + 8.9%, the Netherlands + 6.5% and the Federal Republic of Germany + 5.3%. Increases in France(+ 1.9%), in Ireland(+ 0.8%) were below the Community average and the situation of unemployment remained unchanged in Italy. There was even a small decrease in the number of registered unemployed(-1.1%) in Denmark.
