Abstract

The authors would like to thank the internal and external experts who reviewed the draft report and contributed with great ideas to the improvement of this report. There are: Ms Karin Ohlenforst, Vestas Wind Systems A/S; Ms Athanasia Arapogianni, European Wind Energy Association; Dr Henning Kruse Siemens Wind Power A/S; Ms Katja Birr-Pedersen, Dong Energy; and very specially to Dr Birte Holst Jørgensen, Risø Laboratory, Technical University of Denmark. Matthijs Soede, DG Research & Innovation; Mr. Balázs Józsa, DG Energy; and Dr Lin Luo,Dr. Raymond Moss and Dr Stathis Peteves, JRC.Some of the ideas suggested by the reviewersthat will be included in the next issue of this report include: a brief description of the most recent and relevant EU-supported R&D projects; an analysis of the innovation systems in the offshore subsector; a sketch of R&D investment underthe EU SET-Plan; a description of the industrialisation of wind turbine manufacture; projections of offshore development based on the expected project commissioning year andcoupled to the expected reduction in the cost of energy; a description of novel ideas in wind drive trains such as the hydraulic drive train; additional data on wind curtailment in Member States; a more detailed presentation of European feed-in tariffs; deeper analysis of the competition in the sector, e.g. through the Hirfindahl-Hirschmann index (HHI)1; and projections of rare earth demand along with projections of expected supply.
