The unemployment rate in the European Union rose from 10.7% in April 1995 to 10.9% in April 1996. The labour market situation shows a deterioration in more than half of the Union's regions. The most striking rises in the rates of unemployment (3-7 percentage points) were recorded in Cantabria (Spain), Dytiki Makedonia, Ipeiros (Greece) and Corse (France). On the other hand, notable decreases in the unemployment rates (2-6 percentage points) were recorded in Canarias and Ceuta y Melilla (Spain), Flevoland (Netherlands) and Highlands-Islands (United Kingdom).
